The quick answer
- Choose wood if you want privacy and a fence that adds to the look of your home.
- Choose chain-link if you need a secure, practical boundary and don’t mind seeing through it.
Privacy
A solid wood fence blocks views into your yard — it’s the reason most backyard fences in Winnipeg are wood. Chain-link is see-through by design. That’s an advantage when you want visibility (pets, kids, a commercial lot), and a drawback when you want a private space.
Look and feel
Wood can be designed around the house: board style, height, a trimmed top, post caps, matching gates. See some examples in our projects. Chain-link has a clean, functional look that suits sports areas, side yards, commercial properties and anywhere function comes first.
Durability and maintenance
- Wood needs some care to look its best: keeping soil, snow and plants off the boards, and a stain or sealer from time to time. In return, a well-built wood fence on solid posts lasts for many years.
- Chain-link needs very little maintenance — an occasional check of the posts, ties and gates.
- With either one, the posts matter most. Properly set posts are what keep a fence straight through Manitoba’s freeze-thaw cycles.
Typical uses
- Wood: backyard privacy, patios and decks, front-yard accents, screening, gates between houses.
- Chain-link: pets and play areas, commercial and industrial lots, perimeter security, around equipment or storage.
What about cost?
Price depends on length, height, posts, gates and the site itself, so the honest answer is: it depends on your project. Tell us a few details and we’ll give you a clear idea of what to expect.
Still not sure?
Many properties use both: wood where privacy matters, chain-link where it doesn’t. We install wood fences and chain-link — and we’re happy to talk through the options for your yard.
